My philosophy is that you should get research topics in the first year, and better, to write a paper in the first year. You learn more from doing it. You will never be “ready” for researching unknowns. Do not be afraid of not understanding. By getting research, your understanding will increase as you research and learn. Meanwhile, you should keep the breadth, learning what other research topics conducted by your latemates and reading broadly different journals so that you know what are going on in science and technology in general. You should learn from fellow labmates. You will learn more on details from them than from me.
